This week we are playing an eclectic mix of music including Brad Mehldau, Ella Fitzgerald, Josh Kyle, Herbie Tsoaeli, Lester Young and a special feature of Dave Manington's Riff Raff album, "Hullabaloo" which, by the way, we highly recommend. Their album launch is on 28th January 2013 at the Vortex Jazz Club in London (we heard something about free crisps possibly being given away on the night? not sure why) Dave's website is www.davemanington.com for more

This week, we are very excited to have GARY HUSBAND in the studio. Not only is he a phenomenon on the drums, but also a world-class pianist/keyboardist all rolled up in a neat little package and sometimes plays both on a gig!

You’ve heard him play with Billy Cobham, Level 42, the NDR Big Band, John McLaughlin (to name but a few), but here he also talks about his own projects and how they came together.

By the way – his partner, Troo, makes the most amazing bespoke furniture and if we could kit our studio out wall to wall in all her stuff we would! You should definitely check out her website: www.treecouture.co.uk.

To find out where Gary is playing at a venue near you, he is ever so diligent in the task of uploading gig dates to his website: www.garyhusband.com

This week, one of the UK’s leading trumpet players and composers of his generation, Damon Brown, join us in the studio.

Damon has toured and recorded with many pop and dance acts including Bjork, Paul Weller and DJ Gilles Peterson but found his passion on the International Jazz scene where he has achieved success for many years.

His reputation has been further enhanced with the popularity of his Quintet with tenor saxophonist Steve Grossman, aptly titled The Steve Grossman / Damon Brown quintet. Additionally, Damon’s group ‘Killer Shrimp’ have won several awards within the jazz community and released their second, highly acclaimed album in 2010.

Damon continues to perform and teach mainly in Europe, the Far East and Japan.

Our guest on the show this week is JULIAN SIEGEL. MOJO calls him "One of the UK's most creative saxophonists" and Jez Nelson's Jazz on 3 says he is "Fast becoming a national treasure of the reeds"

JULIAN SIEGEL is an in-demand saxophonist on the UK and European Jazz scene who has worked with many of the top figures in the music. In 2007 he was awarded the BBC Jazz Award for Best Instrumentalist and he has just recieved the London Festival Fringe 2011 London Jazz Award.

He is currently touring a set of new music with the Julian Siegel Quartet featuring some of the most distinctive voices on the UK Scene, the pianist Liam Noble, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Gene Calderazzo. The band released the album 'Urban Theme Park' in 2011 (Basho) to critical acclaim ...... "there's not a moment that doesn't fizz with ingenuity and imagination" MOJO.
It was our great honour to welcome him on the show and to find out more about his incredible career and musical outlook, as well as hearing him play a live performance in our live room with Mark Rose on the double bass and Alex Hutton on keys.

We had the great priviledge of interviewing the internationally acclaimed saxophonist, composer and arranger BARBARA THOMPSON of Paraphernalia band and her drummer husband, Jon Hiseman. The interview took place a couple of months before the BBC Documentary was aired about her struggle with Parkinson's. Barbara composed and played on the TOUCH OF FROST theme tune and apart from touring the world with her band Paraphernalia as well as her husband's Jazz Rock band Colosseum, Barbara also was the support band for THE WHO on a few occasions!

Hear a more personal and musical view of Barbara and Jon's life here on the Jazz Show.
